MDHHS determines covered tasks and approved hours from the individual assessment. Provider enrollment is a separate step; ask the worker and provider support about the status of each part rather than budgeting around an assumed maximum or approval date.
What drives the number
How many ADLs require genuine hands-on help, how often throughout the day, and how much IADL support (housekeeping, meal prep, laundry) is also needed. A person needing help with three ADLs multiple times a day will typically be approved for more hours than someone needing occasional help with one.
Supervision counts, but only as an add-on
Home Help does not cover supervision or prompting alone. Describe the hands-on help the person needs; MDHHS assesses the covered tasks.
Hours can change over time
As a loved one's needs increase or decrease, approved hours can be reassessed — this isn't a one-time, permanent number. See our note on what to expect at renewal for how that process works.
